Local organisations support keeping active and living well with dementia

Local organisations Home Instead Senior Care and Over the Rainbow Care both strongly believe in living well with dementia through personalised activities and in doing so support each other so that their local community can benefit from their services.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society people with dementia need meaningful and enjoyable activities to live well. This can also help to reduce behavioural symptoms such as agitation, restlessness and aggression. Research has shown that many care homes are not stimulating places for people with dementia. Home Instead who support older people living in their own homes, believe that activities which stimulate social interaction, physical well-being and co-ordination, and mental stimulation are vital with dementia.  Sheena Van Parys from Home Instead states; “activities can help us feel safe, secure and valued and help reconnect us to daily life.  With dementia, benefits in doing activities include; building self-esteem, providing fun and happiness, plus reducing behaviours such as boredom, frustration and agitation.”

Like Home Instead, Over The Rainbow Care believe activities have a huge impact on our health and well-being and through their ‘We’ll Meet Again’ Dementia Day Centres located in  Harrogate, Wetherby, Knaresborough and   Ripon  they offer activities that are tailored to the individual.

Megan Sweeting, co-owner of Over the Rainbow Care states; “activities are an integral part of our daily life and our ability to participate in activities of our choice can have a huge impact on our health and well- being. Our activities shape our day to day lives, form part of our daily routines and make us who we are. At Over the Rainbow Care, we are here to support you taking part in activities that have interested you in the past, activities that you currently take part in and activities you may like to try in the future. ‘

The day centres offer care support, a programme of activities, lunch and refreshments, all tailored to each individual that attends.

Sheena Van Parys from Home Instead commented; “we are very excited that these day centres have opened in the local area, they will provide great support to our clients and their families, complementing our own ethos for quality care and support that looks at the whole person.

We know how important it is to provide a service that is person- centred and focused on the individual and what they enjoy, like or even dislike. Very often day centres run through a programme of events that may be of no interest to the individual but at Over the Rainbow Care, they make sure the activities are of interest and of relevance to the person.”
